Mezzosoprano Christine Meadows grew up in Portland, Oregon and received her Bachelor of Music in Performance from Portland State University. She continued her education at Indiana University, where she was a student of Margaret Harshaw. Early in her career, she served as an apprentice artist at Central City Opera. She was invited to perform new opera works for the Houston Grand Opera and with Wesley Balk for Minnesota Opera. Christine made her professional debut withPortland Opera as Cherubino in The Marriage of Figaro in 1986 and has since appeared in more than twenty Portland Opera productions highlighted by her performances as Stefano in Romeo and Juliette, Hansel in Hansel and Gretel, Maddalena in Rigoletto and Nerissa in the North American premiere of Hahn's Le Marchand de Venise. She has appeared in opera roles and concerts across the U.S.A. with companies such as the Florentine Opera, Syracuse Opera, Greater Miami Opera, Louisville Opera, Indianapolis Opera, Tulsa Opera, Anchorage Opera and distinguished herself with two seasons at the New York City Opera appearing in Carmen, The Magic Flute, Mephistofele and The Mikado. Described as a "bouncy and loveable Cherubino" in The Marriage of Figaro (Opera News), "a fluid, stylish and accurate Rosina" in TheBarber of Seville (Opera News) and "a gracious performer with an elegant voice" in Martucci's Songs of Remembrance(The Columbian), she is a singer with great range and appeal.
Since returning to Portland in 1990, Ms. Meadows has been a frequent guest artist with the Oregon Symphony, James DePriest, the Cascade Music Festival, the Portland Baroque Orchestra andmany of the orchestras and music organizations of the N.W. Last season she sang the title role in Gian Carlo Menotti's The Medium with Opera Theater Oregon.
Ms. Meadows teaches voice, vocal pedagogy and is Opera Program Director at Portland State University. Her students are often seen as winners of scholarships, vocal competitions and many of them have begun careers as singers and teachers
